About Workshop

In the recent decades, industrial growth and rapid urbanization have resulted in environmental degradation and resource depletion, necessitating for clean and sustainable environment.  The World Commission on Environment and Development, Brundtland Commission 1987 quotes the sustainable development as Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

A primary goal of sustainable development is to achieve a reasonable and equitably distributed level of economic well-being that can be perpetuated continually for many human generations. Sustainable development ensures that the maximum rate of resource consumption and waste discharge for a selected development portfolio would be sustained indefinitely, in a defined planning region, without progressively impairing its bio-productivity and ecological integrity. Environmental conservation, therefore, contrary to general belief, accelerates rather than hinders economic development. Therefore, the Development plans have to ensure the sustainable and equitable use of resources for meeting the needs of the present and future generations without causing damage to environment. New World Bank report on Strengthening Institutions for Sustainable Growth: Country Environmental Analysis for India underlines the need for ‘Environmental Sustainability’ as the next great challenge that India faces along its path to development. Environmental sustainability is likely to become the next great challenge along India’s development path.·  Environmental institutions are improving, keeping up with increasing pressures of rapid growth and public demand for cleaner environment.  Impressive environmental awakening and good practice initiatives by various players are taking place. The priority is to scale up these good practices across the country and reverse/improve environmental outcomes.

Overall, how to meet the target of integrating the principles of sustainable development in national policy and reversing the loss of environmental resources remains a partially answered question for most countries. In addition, there is poor knowledge on what a country should measure to determine its environmental performance and whether it is making progress or falling short on environmental sustainability.

In order to achieve the above objectives, an International workshop is organized in association with Intercultural Network for Development and Peace (INDP), Puducherry, India and Poitou Charentes Region, France. The workshop would be useful to Faculty and students of the institute in way of generating awareness and education on Sustainable Environment. There would be an exchange of knowledge and technologies among academicians within India and abroad in the field of Sustainable Environment.  This workshop will deal with various aspects and benefits of Environmental Sustainability  on applications in process industries. The workshop will focus on preventive environmental management in the context of environmental governance. The themes for deliberations during the workshop  include alternate technologies for waste minimization, sustainable development, green chemistry, environmental system analysis, waste audit, clean energy and fuels, recovery and reuse. The theme of the workshop will be of great interest to researchers, academicians, industries, government agencies and environmental managers from all over the world. The Outcome would be on technological collaboration in areas of environmentally sustainable development.

The research papers of   international standard will be discussed for possible socioeconomic implications on sustainable practice. Researchers in the field of environmental engineering and management from all over the world will participate in discussions to share their knowledge. The workshop would be useful to academic, industrial and social sectors, to upgrade on the level of preparedness in facing resource depletion and climate change, in the years to come.

The output of the workshop would provide an advanced state-of- the art of social implications on sustainable environment for the public, academicians and students in Puducherry Environs.
